So if you don’t want to wait for the new I.D Buzz we have a wide range of VW T6 and T5 campervans all ready to drive away today which you can take a look at here.

The upcoming I.D Buzz is certainly next level in terms of innovation. In this blog, we’ll be going over the complete specifications for this all electric van and exactly what you can expect from it.

Let’s get straight into it…

What are the features of the I.D Buzz?

As mentioned, this revolutionary new VW van will be ALL electric. The battery of the I.D Buzz is fully electric with performance of 77 kilowatt hours. The I.D Buzz is also built with an MEB (Modular electric building) platform.

In the early models, the I.D Buzz is designed for the driver. However, the I.D Buzz has the equipment and technology which would allow for completely autonomous driving. Though this will only be available when the law allows it.

What is the Design of the I.D Buzz?

The design of the I.D Buzz takes inspiration from traditional VW Vans while adding a modern twist to it. For example, the nose of the I.D Buzz is very short, much like it used to be in the vintage VW vans. Not only this, but a huge retro VW logo has been incorporated on the front of the van. This contrasts to the metallic look of the modern logo found on newer VW vehicles.

The wrap of the new V.W Buzz also has a very retro appearance to it, with a stripy pattern being used.

With this being said, it is impossible to call the appearance of the I.D Buzz fully retro. This is because of the vast array of cameras and radar sensors that are placed all over the van. These cameras and radars are essential for use as an autonomous vehicle.

The short base version of the I.D Buzz is 4 metres long. This is significantly shorter than the short wheel base version of the VW T6 Transporter with a length of 4.9 metres long.

What are the Autonomous features of the I.D Buzz?

As already mentioned, the I.D Buzz’s hidden talent is the autonomous features it has. Argo is an autonomous driving technology company owned by Volkswagen and Ford. Argo is developing all of the technology which the I.D Buzz needs for autonomous driving.

There are a staggering 14 cameras all along the top of the I.D Buzz. The purpose of these cameras is to monitor all surroundings of the van, giving it a complete understanding of its position in the road and proximity to people.

11 radar sensors are also incorporated into the vehicle. An impressive feature of these radar sensors is the fact that they are all heated. This prevents any ice forming on the sensors which could cause damage to them.

There are also 6 lidar used on the I.D Buzz. Lidar is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges.

The biggest lidar can be found on the top of the I.D Buzz and can look 400 metres ahead! Short range lidars can be found all around the vehicle.

The purpose of all of these features is for autonomous driving which will be legal in Europe and the U.S in 2025.

When will I be able to drive the I.D Buzz?

Although the I.D Buzz is fully geared for autonomous driving, it is drivable by person as well.

  • In 2022, the short version of the I.D Buzz will be available in Europe for you to drive it yourself.
  • In 2023, the longbear base version will be available. However, it will only be available in the U.S.
  • In 2025, the I.D Buzz will be available everywhere in the world for use as autonomous taxi buses.

What are the Electric Capabilities of the I.D Buzz?

As mentioned, the I.D Buzz is a fully electric van. The 77 Kilowatt per hour battery works in tandem with the modular eclectic building platform of the I.D Buzz. With this battery, you can expect a range roughly in the region of 250 miles.

When it comes to recharging the Buzz, the current MEB version has a peak of 125 kilowatts. The long rebase version of the I.D Buzz will contain a much bigger battery. However, there are no figures available yet as to its capabilities.

So there you go, you’re now up to date with the exciting capabilities of the upcoming I.D Buzz. But let’s face it, there’s still quite a bit of waiting time until you can get your hands on it. So why not take a look at what vehicles we have available RIGHT NOW, ready to drive away today?
