Holidaying in 2023 and beyond is going to take planning and consideration when it comes to scenic campervan trips UK. While it’s easy to stick on the Sat Nav and take the most direct route to your Air BnB, it often means you lose out on some of nature’s real hidden treasures. If you’re yearning for the open road and some breathtaking views, we’ve put together a list of the UK’s best campervan trips UK.
Scenic Camper Van Routes UK
1. The North Coast 500 (Scotland)
One of the most famous Campervan routes UK is less of a hidden treasure and more of a national treasure. This trip along Scotland’s dramatic coastline is the UK’s answer to Route 66. It features incredible views, unique camping spots, and some picturesque little villages along the way. This road trip is guaranteed to slake even the most itchy-footed traveller. It has castles, beaches, landmarks and the Highlands. Who knows you may even get a chance to camp under the legendary Northern Lights.
This route starts at Inverness Castle and meanders through picturesque villages and towns. Some highlights include Durness, Dornoch, and John O’Groats. Another highlight is the beautiful Achmelvich Bay, a popular spot for beachgoers, hikers and water sports hobbyists.
2. Atlantic Highway, North Cornwall (England)
Another one of our favourite campervan trips UK is The Atlantic Highway (A39), one of England’s most beautiful driving routes. This road covers South-West England and connects Bath to Falmouth. Cornwall is renowned for its Atlantic views (especially around Camelford, Bude, and Wadebridge) and incredible natural scenery.
The road between Barnstaple and Newquay is a particular highlight. It’s also worth making time to stop by Tintagel Castle. Here you can learn more about the legend of King Arthur or take in the wonder of crashing waves at Bedruthan Steps Beach.
3. Llanberis Pass, Snowdonia (Wales)
Snowdonia is a popular tourist destination for hikers, climbers, and other outdoor types. However, the Llanberis Pass is just as impressive and well worth adding to your road trip itinerary. The Llanberis Pass runs along the A4086 from the lovely village of Capel Curig to Snowdon. Caernarfon and the Glyderau are also great stop-off points before tackling the mighty Snowdon.
The A4086 is a road that takes you from the village of Capel Curig to the Royal Town of Caernarfon, past the Glyderau and one of Britain’s most famous mountains; Snowdon.
4. Causeway Coastal Route (Northern Ireland)
Unplug from humdrum work life and take a trip to Northern Ireland! The Causeway Coastal Route is a great place to take your camper van for a weekend away with family or friends. The main route is 120 miles with an additional 256 miles of additional scenic routes that connect to the main route. This makes creating a trip unique as you can use the route between Belfast and Derry as your main route with jaunts off the beaten track along the way.
Keep in mind that roads will vary greatly from A roads to single-track roads so plan before taking on a new route. These campervan routes UK can also be explored by car, bike, or on foot.
5. Bealach na Bà, Wester Ross (Scotland)
Bealach na Bà is wild and woolly. This road is a breathtaking drive along Wester Ross, Skye, and the Islands of Rum and the Outer Hebrides. There’s no visitor centre on this route. Just you, some lovely little towns, and the great outdoors.
If you’re a keen adventurer, love hiking and other outdoor sports, or just want a reason to use all that new camping kit, this route is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Please note that this route can be arduous with lots of steep climbs and small roads. As such parts of it may not be suitable for Caravans, motorhomes or anything larger than a standard VW T5 conversion.
6. Keswick to Kendal, Lake District (England)
The Lake District is beautiful. It is also the inspiration for William Wordsworth’s poetry. The route between Keswick and Kendal is particularly pretty and was created by Avis car rental. This route along the A591 is one of the prettiest in the UK. It boasts views of rolling green hills, crystal clear lakes, and historic little villages.
If you’re looking to make a road trip of it, why not add Keswick to Buttermere, or Ambleside to Ullswater via Keswick to your trip? You can use these routes as bookends to your trip or plan a few weekends away with you, your family, and your customised campervan.
